JUNE 2002 - Traigh basking in glorious sunshine.

While most of Britain has been suffering a wet and miserable early Summer, Traigh Golf Course, by Arisaig in the north west of Scotland, has been enjoying glorious sunshine and in the last week temperatures as high as 25 degrees.

"The weather we have seen here is as good as it gets, and visitors to Traigh in the last ten days will not have been disappointed" says Jack Shaw Stewart, proprietor of the course. "We just hope that this fair spell now continues for the next month or so."

Traigh, a nine hole course, is situated in Scotland¹s West Highlands, lying beside sandy beaches with breathtaking views across to the Cuillins of Skye, Eigg and Rum. It has been described as "the most beautifully sited golf course in the world."

The course has existed for over 100 years, but was enlarged and greatly improved in 1994, and balanced with offering a challenge to the low handicapper while still providing an enjoyable round for families and younger players. Green fees are £14.00 per day, £50.00 for the week. Aged 16 and under are half price.

As well as the golf, the whole area offers plenty to see and do including walking, bird watching and exploring, with sandy beaches lying to north and south of the course - including the Silver Sands of Morar. Accommodation can be found in Arisaig and Mallaig from where there is a ferry link to Skye. Fishing is also available locally on Loch Morar.

MARCH 2002 - New green keeper for Traigh Golf Course

Traigh is delighted to welcome Craig Black as greenkeeper. Craig previously worked at Williamwood Golf Course, near Glasgow and before that at Strathaven Golf Course. Craig is highly qualified and brings extensive experience and greenkeeping skills.

MAY 1998 - New greenkeeper hired from Muirfield

Traigh Golf Course is delighted to announce the appointment of Gavin Johnstone as greenkeeper.Gavin joins us from the greenkeeping staff at Muirfield and has had considerable experience working there and at another of Scotland's premier courses, North Berwick West Links.

Traigh Golf Course, perched on dunes at the end of the breathtaking Road to the Isles, has been totally redesigned and rebuilt. This natural links provide golfers with stunning views out to the legendary Hebridean islands of Skye , Rum, Eigg and Muck. The course is framed by the silvery sands celebrated in the 'Local Hero' film with the rugged rocks of Creag Mhor towering inland. Some scenic compensation when the demands of John Salvesen's par 34 design prove too much for the player!

Traigh (pronounced 'try' and meaning 'beach') has been redesigned using the natural features of the sand dunes that rise up from the beaches from which the course gets its name. John Salvesen has made little alteration to the contours already there, even the bowl shaped green at the 'Spion Kop' 2nd had already been excavated by rabbits. He has created 'a fair challenge to all classes of golfer - a course that is fun, so that one wants to play it again.'

John Salvesen, the designer of the new golf course, is a past Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, and a past chairman of the Championship Committee (responsible for the Open). He has designed and improved courses all over Britain and abroad. He designed the new Charleton course in Fife, and also the course for Elmwood College - the hub of greenkeeper training in Scotland - as well as the new Strathmore Course at Alyth.

Jimmy MacDonald, head greenkeeper at Royal Lytham & St Annes for over 20 years - during which time he has staged four Open Championships, a Ryder Cup and a Curtis Cup - is a native of Arisaig. He has provided invaluable advice on preparing the ground at Traigh where he first learnt the game, and claims that the result is a "truly natural course". Local members have expressed enormous enthusiasm for the project. Tommy McEachen, Captain of the Club and mainstay of the game for many years, said "at last we have a first class course - we always had a first class setting".
